Brief History

The Nuclear Medicine Centre, founded in 2006 under the leadership of Professor B.O.A Osifo, was established with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Nigeria, aimed at using radioactive isotopes for peaceful applications. Being the first in Nigeria, it maintains its reputation as the leading provider of nuclear medicine services and training in Nigeria as it is both a full University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital's Department. It is situated at the Afe Babalola building, adjacent to the radiation oncology department, University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan. The building is named after its foremost benefactor, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN. The department is equipped with a single head gamma camera and a SPECT/CT gamma camera to provide nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment services. In 2020, the department expanded its radionuclide treatment facilities from two isolation rooms to 10 and by the feat is the foremost centre for radionuclide therapies in Nigeria. It also expanded its radiopharmacy and the new radiopharmacy suite is named after Mr Ademola Eleso in recognition of his tremendous support for early detection of cancer in Nigeria. Over the years, the Centre has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from its 7 founding staff to now having a team of 26 professionals. Medical consultants are available to see the patients who visit the centre from all corners of the country for daily scans and thyroid clinic services.
